If you’re looking to escape the urban area, just outside of Kansas City is Waldo, Missouri. Navigating the city with young kiddos can be stressful, but Waldo is a great place for families to walk around and enjoy. There is a variety of fun food and activity options in a compact location that satisfies everyone’s cravings. Whether the group desires a refreshing breakfast, a savory italian lunch, an afternoon snack or a little shopping, you won’t have to travel far.
Grab a Treat … or Several
I’m still dreaming of my must-have meal at Hemma Hemma. The Waldo Bowl includes potatoes, egg souffle, onions, peppers, and sausage gravy. I also ordered the salmon toast with fresh capers, herbs, and feta. Another unforgettable treat were the granola + berries with light house made coconut yogurt. If breakfast is your favorite meal, brunch is served all day on Saturday’s and Sunday’s.
Known for their mouth-watering homemade grinders is family owned Italian restaurant, Jovito’s. However, their talent doesn’t stop at sandwiches. They also have sides of meatballs, toasted raviolis and italian salads tasty enough to eat as meal. Be sure to leave room for their sweets, like cannolis and tiramisu. There’s plenty of space to dine on their multiple outdoor patios, but a to-go order is also convenient and practical. You might need a nap afterwards…
Shop & Create Locally
Ampersand has plenty of KC merchandise to update your wardrobe or home decor. Started by Carrie Kiefer and Morgan Georgie, the friends design colorful artwork that works to brighten a space. Guests can expect to find unique gifts like stickers, dishware, pillows and more for themselves and friends. One of my favorite finds is their KC Current merch.
While we’re not supposed play with food, Salumi Rose encourages you to make art in charcuterie form. You can customize their own board with wood-burning techniques and select various meats, cheeses, fruits and veggies to take home with your creation. This is an exciting experience to reserve for work, friends or family events. For special occasions, Salumi Rose also offers charcuterie delivery.
Fun at Low Prices
For more activities, Waldo also features trails and parks to spend time in the sun. With over 20 acres of land in Sunnyside Park and over 17 acres in Tower Park, there’s plenty of space for family outings. Sunnyside provides grills, a splashground, and a tennis and basketball court. Tower Park hosts two baseball diamonds and accessible restrooms.To learn more about Waldo History, family and friends can check out tours through the Wornall Majors House Museum.
