A 24-Hour Trip to Lawrence, Kansas

June 20, 2024
For Jayhawks and Tigers, Lawrence, Kansas, is a place KCK and KCMO residents have strong feelings toward. There’s quite the animosity between the two universities, impacting the competitive sports teams and community culture. Regardless if you wear crimson and blue or black and gold, Lawrence is a fun Midwest staycation if you can leave your collegiate jerseys at home.

Where to Stay

Perfect for a family weekend or a date-night getaway, The Oread Hotel is in a convenient location for a Lawrence visit. The limestone hotel overlooks the University of Kansas and contains a past of historic architecture combined with modern-day features. Who says you can’t have the luxury of ancient archways and a Nespresso machine in the same room? Or, if your mini-fridge is looking bare, venture to in-house restaurants The Nest and Bird Dog for craft beer, a Jayhawk pasta or another bite to eat.

Sweet & Savory Eats

There’s beer, burgers, and a taste sweetness for Lawrence visitors. The Lawrence Beer Co opened its doors almost seven years ago and pride themselves on community and investment into their beer flavors. Though brussel sprouts may sound unappealing, I still think about them with my peach saison beer. Additionally, The Burger Stand’s truffle fries and sauce bar are a must try item.

For dessert, Sylas and Maddy’s Homemade Ice Cream carries over 40 unique flavors. They use entire watermelons and pies for some of their recipes and welcome new flavor suggestions on their website. Squishington’s Candy also has a colorful display of treats including international and vegan candy options. If you can’t decide between choices, I suggest building a candy bag. Before making your way back home, a candied butterscotch latte from 1900 Barker will keep you going on the road.

Fun for your Inner-Child or Inner-Plant Parent

Even as an adult, The Toy Store gave my inner-child some excitement. The staff hand picks all of their toy options and also allows customers (with parental supervision) try them out before purchase. Plant lovers should also to stop by Jungle House Goods. Owners Rachel and Jhami Guffey can provide plant care instructions or find a patterned pot to decorate your home. New and experienced plant parents are welcome. To wind down, The Lawrence Library is beautiful with so many cozy spots to read. The best part is that it’s located in the heart of the city.
